I don't think I've laughed so hard while reading a self-help slumber volume. Winter mixes sense of humour and data as he informs you what to do and what non to practise to get the best sleep of your life. I can't attest to it working because I'm yet convincing my other one-half to make some changes, but it has helped me realize what nosotros're doing wrong and why we've both been so tired for and so long.On a side annotation, this took me forever to actually start reading (I put it on my currently reading shelf long before I actually started reading information technology) considering I feared information technology would be dry and boring. I wanted the help with the slumber bug, but I didn't want a volume that put me to sleep. This is non a volume that will put y'all to sleep, though.
Happy reading!

It's a different kind of sleep volume and it will make you expect differently at your sleep. It's interesting that Dr. Winters wanted to write this book to be like a "sweeping" novel and while I remember that's a tall order considering it'south a book nigh sleep, I do have say I wasn't bored and was mildly entertained past Dr. Winters' witty comments and advice that was peppered throughout the book. This is not a volume that volition make you fall sleep more like it will help you lot to sleep meliorate after it blows your mind with the scientific discipline of sleep and how it affects your body.
Dr. Winters breaks sleep downwards into manageable bite sized chunks for us. I piece of work night shift so my sleep schedule is very much out of sync with the normal and I call back the biggest thing I took abroad from this volume is that I am actually sleeping during the day. Dr. Winters explains that sleep has stages and cycles…so those days where I am dozing and I can tell you ever vocal that played on the radio that was actually sleeping…well more similar resting/calorie-free sleep but it counts towards the whole and that'due south what matters. That takes away i of the biggest stresses about sleeping for me.
Afterward reading this book I am looking at my sleep differently. I know what I have been doing wrong and now that I am armed with the tools Dr. Winter gave me in this book I can make changes to how I think about sleep and how I approach sleep. So far the changes that I have made accept helped a lot.
...moreAdept night! I've read a lot of articles and a book or two on slumber and this is my favorite one. Dr. Wintertime is really funny and for this book existence on the subject of sleep, it didn't put me to sleep at all (while I was reading it). Now, I feel like I may accept a risk against easy insomnia and I hope to never reach the hard insomnia phase thanks to this book.

3. My trying to sleep and worrying about non sleeping is probably causing a pregnant corporeality of my slumber bug.
4. Don't go to bed if you're not sleepy! Longer time in bed does not equate to better/ more sleep.
I could keep and on with what I learned. I loved this book. It was easy to read, concepts were explained well and it was really quite funny in parts!

4/5; 4 stars; A-This was a fact filled, very educational book. If you lot want to acquire the ins and outs of how your brain uses sleep to stay healthy and how a lot of the trunk's systems work, this is the book for you lot. The author has a humorous way of writing and manages to convey technical details in a style that isn't overwhelming for those of us who aren't neurologists. He may have gone a scrap overboard on the humor and I actually skimmed over the many 'fun experiments' which didn't add much to the educational component.
The author includes a lot of information nigh serious sleep related weather like narcolepsy and sleep apnea, besides every bit some warnings for shift-workers. I learned most things I've always been curious about like restless leg syndrome, Parkinsons illness, and paradoxical indisposition.
The author gives some pretty proficient advice for creating a good sleeping environment and schedule. Then much of his communication is sensible and the type of thing people always ignore. Thinking of my ain kids and their complaints most beingness tired and their unwillingness to do all the sensible things I suggest like leaving the electronics out of the bedchamber, sticking to a schedule, getting rid of the belatedly coffee, etc, I can see how a sleep specialist might go a little jaded. Some reviewers seem to accept crime to the doctors attitude that for most of united states, we actually don't accept a sleep trouble, nosotros but need to make a few changes and recollect almost it differently.
Anyway, this book was definitely worth a read for its many, many educational components.
I would have given it v stars but was pretty disappointed to run across there was no mention whatsoever of the hormone related sleep difficulties that most women experience in dissimilar phases of life. Mayhap, similar my traditionally trained family doctor, the writer simply got well-nigh iii microseconds of education on women's health issues. Maybe anytime the medical profession will wake up to the fact that half the people on the planet are female!
...moreInsomnia is a self diagnosed disease and many people actually sleep an adequate amount, even while complaining...they have a problem with the quality of their slumber. This is very subjective area...no blood tests bachelor to decide if there is a biological trouble! So he feels that some Cognitive Behavioral Therapy may go your head screwed on directly, and that it is this understanding of the existent psychological roots of your anxieties that can provide the best path out of this self diagnosis.
Of form, if you take a sleep study and something like Apnea is detected, then yous should endeavour the CPAP or an oral device. This 'difficult' insomnia is treatable and information technology should be treated.
Only if you lot are similar me, who complain daily about some slumber break; get your mind directly, throw the cat out of the bed, get to bed a niggling later, plough off you lights, and get over it.
ZZZZZ
...more thanReally, when I starting time got into this book, I was thrilled. Information technology'southward been a while since I started havin slumber issues, and this book is like a little enclycopedia about the subjet, merely still, while I was approaching the end of it, I was nevertheless looking for my sleep solution, which never came.
Do not get me wrong, that is a skilful book, it is going to give you nice tips and tricks to impress ladies at parties (and to sleep a picayune bit better), but be enlightened that, at the stop of the day, information technology's all
Rating: iv.5Actually, when I first got into this volume, I was thrilled. It's been a while since I started havin sleep issues, and this volume is similar a little enclycopedia about the subjet, only all the same, while I was approaching the end of information technology, I was notwithstanding looking for my sleep solution, which never came.
Practise non get me wrong, that is a expert book, it is going to give you squeamish tips and tricks to impress ladies at parties (and to slumber a little bit meliorate), but be aware that, at the end of the day, information technology'due south all nigh Occam's razor, hence you're not going to solve your serious issues reading a book, but y'all have to work difficult on information technology, though this nice manual helps.
...moreAn informative read. Tips, facts, and advice that I can look back on from time to time to assistance me with my sleep outcome. This is actually even more than than that...it's the science behind those restless nights and it explained it quite well. At that place's always that dreaded hesitation when reading a not-fiction, health and wellness type book. Is it going to be informative? Is it going to keep me intrigued until the end? Am I going to get anything from this? Is this real scientific discipline and medicine or some new hip trend of tips and advice that really does not aid at all? I am pleased that this book did not disappoint. I am glad that there really was tips that I felt really mattered, really helped, really gave me some relief to my problem. This volume...the author..told this book in a witty, humorous and chronicle-able way. Information technology is a guide for me. It was not a catholicon for me..once more, information technology's a guide. It's a starting point..and a relief. I keep this book on my coffee tabular array equally my become to when I am in need.
Very informative. Highly recommended read.

...moreFor starters, I piece of work in a mattress manufacturing company. While I might just exist a little close to the news, sleep has appeared to exist a growing topic in wellness and wellness. This book's publi As someone who doesn't sleep well, who was diagnosed with apnea, seeing the title of this book acquired an immediate need to shove aside all other books I was reading at the time and open up this one upwards. I am glad I did. Now, admittedly, I did not read this book from cover to embrace, simply there is a reason for that.
For starters, I work in a mattress manufacturing visitor. While I might just exist a niggling shut to the news, sleep has appeared to exist a growing topic in health and wellness. This book'due south publication appears to ride that wave. Before succumbing to any of the other hype in sleep medicine, I say that i should read this book.
Written past W. Chris Winter, Physician, a md specializing in sleep medicine, this book is a sarcastic, refreshing read when information technology comes to how we sleep as humans, the need for sleep, all the mechanics of sleep, and then all of the ailments impacting a good night's rest.
Aside from the want to absorb all the data that I could, I genuinely enjoyed reading this book.
In the starting time of the book, Chris works to dispel some of the myths almost sleep, including the belief in the proverb "I haven't slept in days." He seems determined to remove that belief once and for all, insisting that our body does slumber, no thing how hard we might even attempt to do otherwise. Information technology's the quality of that sleep that is the problem.
One time y'all get past some of the more full general chapters, including descriptions on the different levels of slumber (the ever popular REM sleep being one of them), Chris then breaks the book up into more than specific dealings, including medication for slumber, and some of the specific ailments including apnea, insomnia, and others. He fifty-fifty has a chapter on whether naps are skilful or bad.
This was where I skipped over places. Particularly the capacity on insomnias. I rarely ever suffer from anything of the sort. As interesting every bit information technology was, it just wasn't useful to me, and then I passed over them.
His descriptions for apnea all the same were spot-on. I learned even more than what my sleep doctors had imparted on me.
Overall, the book was a peachy read. Plenty of information and advice while maintaining a calorie-free-hearted tone that at times made me express mirth. There is a lot I am taking from this book. While some may be tricky to utilize, the trials volition be worth it.
Chris does a superb job showing why he specializes in slumber medicine. It'southward a must read for anyone having problem with their sleep. I highly recommend it.
